Booking American Airlines Award Flights with Partner Miles

How to use partner miles from programs like Avios, Atmos Rewards, and Etihad Guest to book American Airlines and Alaska flights at competitive rates.

Marvin (Updated: ) 5 min read

American Airlines and Alaska Airlines flights are bookable through multiple partner loyalty programs, not just their own programs. This matters because partner programs often price the same seats at lower point costs than AAdvantage or Atmos Rewards — especially for short-haul domestic routes.

Here's a practical overview of which partner programs are worth using and how to approach booking.

Alaska Airlines and Atmos Rewards

Alaska Airlines merged with Hawaiian Airlines, and the two programs — Mileage Plan and HawaiianMiles — combined into a single program called Atmos Rewards in September 2025.

Atmos Rewards maintains partner award charts for flights on airlines including American Airlines. Notably, the program has historically offered competitive pricing on short domestic routes, and it still allows free changes and cancellations on partner awards. Mixed-partner awards are also now bookable through the Atmos website — itineraries combining multiple partner airlines in a single booking.

Partner Programs for American Airlines Awards

British Airways Avios

British Airways uses a distance-based pricing structure for American Airlines awards. Short-haul domestic routes — under about 1,150 miles — can represent strong value using Avios, particularly if the cash price for the route is high.

Note that taxes and fees on American flights booked through British Airways are lower than on British Airways-operated flights, making this one of the cleaner Avios redemption options.

Chase Ultimate Rewards, Amex Membership Rewards, and Capital One miles all transfer to British Airways at 1:1.

Qatar Airways Privilege Club (Avios)

Qatar adopted the Avios currency in 2023 and uses a per-segment pricing model. Short domestic American Airlines segments can be booked at competitive Avios rates through Qatar, and online booking generally works well. In some cases, phone booking is required if online search doesn't surface availability.

Amex Membership Rewards transfers to Qatar's Avios at 1:1.

Etihad Guest

Etihad Guest prices American Airlines awards on a distance-based chart. Short-haul domestic routes can be a good value when award space is available. Booking typically requires calling Etihad directly (877-690-0767), as online availability for AA partner awards can be limited.

Both Amex Membership Rewards and Capital One miles transfer to Etihad at 1:1.

Qantas Frequent Flyer

Qantas treats multi-stop itineraries as a single flight for pricing purposes when connections are on the same ticket, which can make connecting routes more efficient. Amex and Capital One both transfer to Qantas.

Finnair Plus

Note: As of late 2025, American Express ended its transfer partnership with Finnair. Verify current transfer partner lists with your card issuer before planning Finnair redemptions.

JAL Mileage Bank

JAL prices American Airlines awards on a round-trip basis, which is a less flexible structure than one-way programs. Still worth considering for specific round-trip itineraries where the pricing is favorable.

How to Find Award Space

Start with AA.com. When searching for award travel, use the "Redeem miles" feature on American's website and enable the "Show all partner airline availability" option. This shows you what's bookable across programs.

Use Alaska/Atmos for domestic routes. The Atmos website shows award availability for its own flights and for partners including American Airlines. Check for your specific dates.

Call partner programs for limited online availability. Etihad and some other partners may show more availability by phone than online. If a route looks attractive but online booking isn't working, a call to the partner program's service line is worth trying.

Build in flexibility. Award availability improves significantly when you're flexible on departure time, routing, or travel dates. The calendar-view search tools on most airline websites show low-availability days quickly.

Getting Elite Benefits on Award Tickets

Add your AAdvantage number to your reservation through AA.com's "Manage Trips" feature. If you hold AAdvantage status, this enables free checked bags and upgrade eligibility on award tickets. Similarly, partners like Finnair and Royal Jordanian let you add your frequent flyer number to access status benefits.

Which Cards Help

Chase Ultimate Rewards transfers to British Airways, Aeroplan, and Singapore at 1:1. The Chase Sapphire Preferred, Chase Sapphire Reserve, and Chase Ink Business Preferred all earn and transfer Ultimate Rewards.

Amex Membership Rewards transfers to British Airways, Etihad, Qatar, and Qantas. The Platinum and Gold cards are the primary earners.

Capital One transfers to British Airways, Etihad, and Qantas. The Capital One Venture X and Venture are the main transfer-capable cards.

Bilt Rewards transfers to Atmos Rewards at 1:1. The Bilt Mastercard earns on rent and everyday categories with no annual fee.

Bottom Line

The highest-value American Airlines and Alaska awards often aren't booked through AAdvantage or Atmos Rewards directly. British Airways Avios pricing on short domestic AA routes, Etihad Guest, and Qatar Avios each offer competitive rates when award space is available. Build a portfolio of flexible points — Chase, Amex, or Capital One — that transfer to multiple programs, and check availability across partners before committing to a redemption.
