AAdvantage miles and Loyalty Points are not interchangeable: miles are redeemed for awards, while Loyalty Points determine status progress. Check the earning terms for the ticket or partner you are using rather than assuming every mile activity also helps with status.
How to search and book
Start on American's site with flexible dates and include partner-operated results. Price a one-way itinerary first; it is easier to compare and can be combined into a round trip later. Before booking, check the operating carrier, connection count, cabin, taxes and carrier charges, and the cancellation rule that applies to your itinerary. Partner awards can price differently from American-operated flights, so the lowest-looking mileage number is not automatically the best trip.
