How to Save on Airbnb and Vacation Rentals with Points and Gift Cards
Practical strategies for cutting the cost of Airbnb and Vacasa bookings using discounted gift cards, points redemptions, and membership discounts.
Unlike hotels, Airbnb doesn't have its own loyalty program — you can't earn points by booking through the app the way you would with Marriott or Hyatt. But that doesn't mean vacation rentals have to be full price. There are several ways to reduce what you pay, and the best outcomes come from stacking multiple discounts at once.
Discounted Airbnb Gift Cards
Airbnb accepts gift cards, which opens the door to buying gift cards at a discount before you book. Sources worth checking:
Costco and Sam's Club: Both sell Airbnb gift cards at a discount, typically in the 5–10% range. Availability varies, but it's the most reliable source for consistent savings.
Grocery store promotions: Some Kroger-affiliated stores and other grocers run periodic gift card promotions through their apps and weekly flyers. Airbnb appears in these promotions occasionally.
Secondary gift card marketplaces: Sites like Raise and CardDepot buy and sell unused gift cards. Airbnb cards appear there with variable discounts. For a large booking, it's worth checking whether a better deal is available.
Credit card shopping portals: Chase, Amex, and Capital One sometimes show discounted gift card purchasing through their online shopping portals. The discount is typically smaller than the above sources, but it stacks with any points you earn on the purchase.
A few things to know: Airbnb limits how many gift cards you can add to an account (up to 8 cards within a 24-hour period, with a total cap per booking), so plan your purchases in advance for large bookings.
Capital One Miles for Vacation Rentals
The Capital One Venture X and Capital One Venture both allow you to redeem miles at 1 cent per point against Airbnb charges. You make the booking with your card, then apply miles to offset the charge within 90 days.
This is a simple, no-friction approach — you're not navigating award availability or transfer partners. The rate of 1 cent per point isn't spectacular compared to the best travel partner transfers, but for vacation rental spending it's practical since there's no other reward program that covers Airbnb directly.
Vacasa Bookings with Points
Wyndham Vacasa Partnership
Wyndham Rewards has a partnership with Vacasa, giving you access to 44,000+ vacation rental homes across the U.S., Canada, Mexico, and Central America. Points redemption is on a fixed chart: lower-priced properties cost fewer points per bedroom per night, and higher-priced properties cost more.
Redemption value on Vacasa can be strong relative to what Wyndham points are worth for hotel stays. Booking is currently phone-only — call 800-441-1034 with your travel dates and property preferences.
Capital One and Citi both transfer to Wyndham at 1:1, so this is accessible from either card ecosystem. The Wyndham Rewards Earner Plus Card and Earner Business Card earn points directly.
Hyatt Homes & Hideaways
World of Hyatt has a vacation rental category that allows you to redeem Hyatt points at vacation properties, with earning rates similar to standard Hyatt stays. Inventory is more limited than Vacasa, but the value per point is reasonable for well-located properties. Chase Ultimate Rewards transfers to Hyatt at 1:1.
The World of Hyatt Credit Card earns 9x points at Hyatt properties (including Homes & Hideaways).
Marriott Homes & Villas
Marriott has its own vacation rental platform covering a large number of properties globally. Redemption value is lower than what you'd typically get from Marriott points on hotel stays, but the Cash & Points option exists for partial point redemptions if you want to reduce cash outlay without spending a large number of points.
AARP Discount
An AARP membership costs about $16 per year and unlocks a 5% discount on Airbnb bookings. For a $1,000 booking, that's $50 off — the membership pays for itself many times over with a single stay. Some credit cards offer credits or cashback toward AARP membership (Chase cards and Rakuten have offered deals historically).
AAA and military discounts apply to some Vacasa properties, typically in the 10–15% range.
Stacking Multiple Discounts
The most savings come from combining approaches. For a large Airbnb booking:
- Purchase discounted Airbnb gift cards at Costco (or a grocery store promotion)
- Pay for the gift cards with a card that earns bonus points at that retailer
- Add AARP discount to the booking
- Apply Capital One miles to the charge if you have remaining balance
Each layer adds a few percent, and on a $2,000–$3,000 vacation rental they stack into meaningful savings.
For Vacasa specifically: purchase discounted Visa gift cards at Office Depot using the Chase Ink Business Cash (5x on office supply purchases), then use those gift cards toward the Vacasa booking or use Wyndham points through the phone booking route.
Bottom Line
Vacation rentals don't have loyalty programs, but the tools available — discounted gift cards, hotel points partnerships, and direct credit card redemption — cover most of the gaps. For regular Airbnb users, an AARP membership and a Capital One Venture card are the simplest starting point. For Vacasa, Wyndham Rewards offers some of the best point value in the vacation rental space.
