How We Rank Cards

CardCurator rankings are not a single universal score. They are a combination of reward value, cost, current offer strength, and audience fit. This page explains the logic in plain English.

Primary Ranking Factors

Reward power

Base earn rate, bonus-category strength, point value, and practical redemption flexibility.

Cost to hold

Annual fee, foreign transaction fees, and whether recurring credits are easy or hard to use.

Current offer value

Current signup bonus size, spend requirement, and how realistic that bonus is for the target audience.

Audience fit

A card can be excellent in general and still be a weak fit for a recent graduate, expat, or self-employed user.

What That Means In Practice

On a category page, we care more about category-specific earning and practical value than about prestige. On a comparison page, we care more about tradeoffs between two specific products. On an audience page, we care more about whether the card actually fits the user’s constraints.

That means a premium travel card can rank first on a travel page and still rank below a no-fee card on a recent-graduates page. Different intent, different weighting.

Rankings are reviewed against real-world friction. A benefit that is hard to use does not get full credit just because its headline value is large.

FAQ

Does CardCurator rank cards by affiliate payout?

No. CardCurator rankings are based on card economics and fit. Affiliate status does not override annual fee math, reward rates, or audience fit.

Why can two people get different best-card recommendations?

Because the right answer changes with spending mix, reward goals, existing cards, and willingness to pay annual fees. CardCurator distinguishes between broad editorial rankings and personalized wallet recommendations.

How often do rankings change?

Rankings can change when a card’s offer, earn rates, fees, or practical value changes. Time-sensitive pages are refreshed when new public information becomes available.
