Maximize Your HSBC Rewards Points
Program Overview
HSBC Rewards is the proprietary points currency for HSBC credit cards in the U.S. Points are earned through two cards β the HSBC Premier credit card ($95/yr) and the HSBC Elite credit card ($495/yr). Both cards require an active HSBC Premier checking account to be eligible, which itself requires $100,000 in combined assets/deposits, $5,000/month in direct deposits, or an HSBC U.S. residential mortgage β a significant barrier that makes this program inaccessible to most consumers. The program's primary strength is a 12-partner transfer network spanning 10 airlines plus Wyndham and Accor. All partners transfer at 1:1 except Accor Live Limitless (2:1). Transfers are instant and irreversible. Portal redemption value is capped at 1.25Β’/pt for Premier cardholders and 1.5Β’/pt for Elite. Cash, gift card, and merchandise redemptions yield just 1.0Β’/pt. HSBC Rewards is best for existing HSBC Premier banking customers who want a travel card and plan to transfer points to airline partners for premium cabin bookings. For most users, the banking requirement and transfer partner roster are less compelling than Chase UR or Amex MR. Points expire after 12 months of account inactivity (18 months for California residents), or upon account closure. Points cannot be redeemed after the account is closed β redeem before closing.
Earning Tips
HSBC Rewards has only two earning cards β there is no card stacking strategy across the program. HSBC Premier credit card ($95/yr): - 3x on gas stations and groceries - 2x on travel (flights, hotels, rental cars) - 1x on all other purchases - Best for: everyday gas/grocery spending HSBC Elite credit card ($495/yr): - 5x on travel (flights, hotels, rental cars) β among the best travel multipliers available - 2x on dining/restaurants - 1x on all other purchases - Best for: travel purchases and restaurant spending Cardholders who hold both cards should route travel spend to the Elite (5x) and gas/grocery spend to the Premier (3x). However, most users will hold only one. There is no HSBC shopping portal for bonus earning. Points do not pool across separate HSBC accounts. No welcome offer or referral bonus beyond the standard signup bonus on each card. Keep the account active with at least one purchase every 12 months to prevent points expiration.
Redemption Tips
Best redemption values (approximate): Transfer sweet spots: - Turkish Miles&Smiles: ~45,000 pts for Star Alliance business class to Europe one-way; ~90,000 pts round-trip. One of the best-value Star Alliance programs. - British Airways Avios: ~7,500 pts for short-haul AA/BA domestic flights (under 1,151 miles); ~26,750 pts for medium-haul transatlantic (Avios distance zone) - Iberia Plus: ~34,000 pts round-trip business class NY-Madrid on BA during off-peak; ~68,000 pts peak - Flying Blue: ~50,000 pts business class to Europe one-way; check promo awards (frequent) for 20-30% discounts - Avianca LifeMiles: United flights at saver rates; sometimes better pricing than United's own program - Emirates Skywards: ~57,500 pts US-Europe first class one-way on Emirates metal Portal redemptions (no transfer required): - HSBC Premier: up to 1.25Β’/pt through HSBC Travel - HSBC Elite: up to 1.5Β’/pt through HSBC Travel - Use the portal when no partner award is available or for simple domestic bookings Avoid: - Cash back redemptions: 1.0Β’/pt (worst value) - Gift cards and merchandise: 1.0Β’/pt or lower - Accor transfers: 2:1 ratio cuts effective value in half Expiration note: points are forfeit on account closure β redeem or transfer before closing.
Transfer Strategy
All HSBC Rewards transfers are instant and irreversible. Never transfer speculatively β confirm partner award availability first. Airline partners (1:1 ratio unless noted): - Aer Lingus AerClub: Oneworld; good for transatlantic on BA/Iberia metal - Air India Maharaja Club: Star Alliance; added February 2026 - Avianca LifeMiles: Star Alliance; strong value for United/Lufthansa routes - British Airways Executive Club (Avios): Distance-based pricing. Sweet spot: ~7,500 Avios for AA/BA short-haul under 1,151 miles - Emirates Skywards: Emirates metal only; ~57,500 pts for US-Europe first class one-way - Flying Blue (Air France/KLM): SkyTeam; ~50,000 pts for business class to Europe one-way; frequent promo awards available - Iberia Plus: Off-peak transatlantic pricing; ~34,000 pts round-trip business class on BA metal - Qantas Frequent Flyer: Oneworld; useful for Australia routes - Qatar Airways Privilege Club (Avios): Oneworld; premium cabin on Qatar metal - Turkish Miles&Smiles: Star Alliance; ~45,000 pts for business class to Europe one-way β often the best Star Alliance transfer value Hotel partners: - Accor Live Limitless (ALL): 2:1 ratio (2,000 HSBC pts β 1,000 Accor pts) β generally poor value; avoid unless Accor points have immediate use - Wyndham Rewards: 1:1; reasonable for mid-tier domestic properties (~3,500β10,000 pts/night) Strategy tips: - Turkish Miles&Smiles and British Airways Avios are the strongest partners for aspirational travel - Avoid Accor transfers β the 2:1 ratio halves the effective value - Portal booking at 1.25-1.5Β’/pt is a reasonable fallback for routes without strong partner availability
